Hate Bias Student Advisory Group (HBSAG)
Student leadership. Community insight. Collective action.
The Hate Bias Student Advisory Group (HBSAG) plays a vital role in advancing the mission of Bias Incident Support Services (BISS) by centering student voices in the university’s response to hate and bias. Made up of passionate undergraduate and graduate students from diverse identities, disciplines, and lived experiences, HBSAG ensures that student perspectives remain at the heart of our work.
HBSAG strengthens BISS by:
- Offering insight: Providing feedback and recommendations to enhance the impact, visibility, and responsiveness of hate-bias support services.
- Building bridges: Serving as liaisons between the student body and BISS to promote trust, awareness, and access.
- Engaging the community: Representing BISS at campus events and helping to foster inclusive dialogue and understanding across the university.
HBSAG's work includes:
- Monthly meetings: Gathering during the fall and spring semesters to discuss current campus climate, hate-bias concerns, and opportunities to strengthen student support.
- Programming & outreach: Supporting events and initiatives such as:
- Breaking Bias trainings
- Free Speech & Expression panels
- Restorative and healing spaces like The Circle
- Student-centered events like Snack-A-demics
- Campus collaboration: Partnering with student organizations and university programs to ensure student needs are addressed in bias response efforts.
